Constructed in 1916, Mary Lyon Hall is a 74,000 square foot, heritage dormitory on the Plymouth State University campus. The building includes 252 beds for undergraduate students while also housing three academic departments. Faced with increased energy costs, deferred maintenance, and growing demands when recruiting the modern university student, this beloved University landmark required extensive renovations.
The exterior envelope and all systems within the building were upgraded and modernized, including egress, plumbing and heating, fire protection, electrical, and site drainage. The design team carefully evaluated and reused or restored the original slate roof system, cupola, and historic weathervane, while incorporating modern, energy-efficient materials and systems throughout the building. Two new exterior egress stair towers were added to provide focal points to visitors and frame a new courtyard space, which includes sculpture, a reading garden, and stone sitting walls, providing a warm afternoon area for respite or social interaction.
